Chapter Nineteen

Everything stopped, including Ladon’s breathing when he heard Magnus scream. He turned, taking in the scene. Damian pressed the barrel of his gun against the forehead of an orderly. The orderly visibly shook. If piss ran down his pant legs in the next few minutes, it wouldn’t surprise Ladon.

Magnus lay on the ground clutching his chest. He tore at his shirt collar as if the material choked him.

Ladon couldn’t move from his spot. The horror of the scene cemented him to the pavement.

“What’s in the syringes?” Damian pressed the gun to the man’s forehead even harder.

Either the orderly couldn’t get the words passed the fear, or he didn’t know because he shook his head and stood there like he waited to die.

“You’ll tell me, or you’ll die.” Ladon strongly suspected Damian would kill him whether he gave him the information or not.

Magnus’ shirt tore until he exposed his chest. He clawed at his skin, creating ugly, bloody scratches. An urgency slammed into him like getting hit by a bus. Everything in him roared to life until the sound leaked out of his mouth.

He stalked across the parking lot, shifting halfway.

As soon as he closed the distance, he grabbed Magnus’ wrists, pulling his hands away. Magnus fought against Ladon. Ladon tightened his hold until he thought he might leave bruises.

His stomach rolled, the bile rising into his throat. He fought against nausea and let instinct take over.

He pulled Magnus to him, pressing their chests together. Ladon held him around the waist, blocking him from touching his wound. Instead, Magnus dug his fingernails into Ladon’s back as if he knew he had to get through Ladon to get to himself.

Ladon stood and pressed Magnus against the wall while Garridan finished off the last of the orderlies and Damian demanded answers.

“Explain. Now!” Damian lifted the gun in the air, pulling the trigger before returning the barrel to the guy’s head. The orderly moved back, crying out when the hot metal burned into his skin. “Don’t worry. You won’t feel the barrel burn after I shoot you.”

Ladon’s ears rang at the blast, but Magnus didn’t stop screaming.

The orderly held up his hands when Damian cocked the gun again. “Oh god. Okay. I-I think it might be phase two.”

Damian sighed and rolled his eyes. “What the hell is phase two?”

Ladon hissed when Magnus’ nails dug in a bit too much. “Just bite me if you have too, Magnus.”

Magnus didn’t give any indication he heard Ladon. Hell, Ladon didn’t even hear his own voice passed the screams.

The orderly looked like a sweating statue. The only thing that moved was his mouth. “It’s a drug.”

Damian’s eyes turned red, and his fangs dropped. He hissed and said, “I care about one fucking person in this whole world, and he cares about them.” Damian pointed to Magnus and Ladon. “So you better start talking.”

“Um…I-I don’t know. I swear. It just takes away the paranormal part of you guys.”

What the fuck did that mean? And did Ladon want to know?

Probably not.
